Mural Completed

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Finny the Doo is completed! All fourteen feet of it. This mural totally brought me back to the painting vibe. Next up is a portrait drawing. Here’s hoping I still got the touch with charcoal!

I have my cheerleaders at my side… er, back. They got my back.

New Arting Project. Hollaaaa!

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

I have the coolest commission yet: a mural of cartoon characters for a family’s playroom. This group is something that Disney has a say on, so I will not be posting pictures. The characters come from a story that rhymes with “Finny the Doo.” The wall is eight feet by fourteen feet, the biggest project I’ve done on my own. I’m using interior latex paint due to its water-based properties. Water = less fumes = less lingering cancer smells.

I CAN post pictures of my paint cans.

My base palette contains super specific types of each of the following: red, blue, yellow, almost black, almost white, and a brilliant white. I was asked to have a muted color scheme, and I found a lot of great choices at Home Depot with Behr. I’d link to Behr, but they are poop heads who do not make their website easy to navigate.

creepy paint

I thought this was neat. The paint that dried on the side is sensitive enough that it picks up the ink on the can label.

“When Did You Choose to Be Straight?”

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Saw this video linked on the facebooks. Two fellas by the names of Travis Nuckolls and Chris Baker walked around the Colorado Springs area asking people their thoughts on homosexuality. They then ask their interviewees when they decided to be straight. Bravo, guys. I’m totally using this the next time I experience gay haters.

I have a feeling this question may break a few people’s brains.

The It Does Get Better Project

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

I’m super tired right now and I can’t feel my hands (yay wrist problems) but I wanted to post this before it becomes of of those “yeah I’ll get to it” doodles.

There’s a project out in the world called It Does Get Better, started by Dan Savage and his partner. It targets teenagers who identify somewhere in the LGBT-Q spectrum who are or have been harassed by others for being “different,” specifically for being some form of non-heterosexual.

When I clicked onto the It Gets Better Youtube page, this mohawked dude was the main video:

This is fucking brilliant. This project is connecting people who have been there to people who are there, going through all the bullshit. I wish this type of resource was available when I was a young person being pushed around for not being cool. I think a ton of people, not just the queer, can benefit from seeing people who have gone above and beyond the bullying. I can only hope that there are outreach programs that seek to connect IRL with people struggling, like the Trevor line, that can help people connect in an active way past the passive connectivity of internet video.

and here’s Dan Savage and his husband Terry’s own video:
