YouTube has begun the great undertaking of righting copywrongs. Videos folks post to the website using music without the artists’ permission are being muted. The visual content remains, and a notice under the video states the reason for the muting.
example:
A bunch of users are gonna be pissed if this keeps up. GooTube has been tracking copyright music; now they are doing something about it. How is this going to affect YouTube usage? We can only look at so many videos of puppies and kittens. People discover artists using YouTube and probably purchase tunes they would not have if they didn’t use the previewing services of the internet. Yes, people who buy music still exist.
Are cover bands going to be affected? They use copyrighted music, but they are performing it. What about clips of movies and tv shows — are they going to get blacked out? Live performances of the bands playing their own songs? This will be confusing.
I will admit that I have been ignoring the articles sprinkling on the internet every couple of days as to whether or not Watchmen will be released on time. I’m already dealing with Harry Potter being released at a later time even though I don’t want to see it and the Twilight whores clogging every internet tube available. The Wolverine movie’s upcoming unveiling keeps hope alive (do NOT fuck up Gambit’s portrayal, so help me christ). Mostly.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal is said to involve a sizable cash payment to Fox and a percentage of the film’s boxoffice grosses; Fox will not be a co-distributor on the film, nor will it co-own the “Watchmen” property, but it will share in revenue derived from it. The studios released a joint statement last night [Jan 14].
“Warner Bros. acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography,” the statement read. “Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith defending against those claims.”
Fox sued Warners in February, claiming copyright infringement based on agreements the studio had with producer Larry Gordon. Feess ruled Dec. 24 that Gordon did not secure proper rights to “Watchmen” from Fox before shopping the project and setting it up at Warners.
Feess’ decision prompted settlement talks to heat up because Warners faced the prospect of an injunction stopping its March 6 release of the $130 million comic book adaptation.

Kate Winslet won for both Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress this year at the Golden Globes. Speech, speech!
for best supporting actress (as Hanna Schmitz in The Reader) Kate is pretty together:
for best actress just (as April Wheeler in Revolutionary Road) Kate is super adorable, all over the place, says sorry to Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie, and confesses her love for everyone:
Actors and actresses who breathe their jobs are awesome.
Burger King has let loose the latest of its hip marketing: the whopper sacrifice. For ten of your facebook friends, you can get a coupon for a free whopper. WHAT? Yes. It’s an application on facebook, and Burger King’s website is keeping a count.
“They” say they are challenging people’s fair-weathered friends lists. I say they are cleaning up. Your limit of coupons is one burger per account, so don’t go deleting everyone and be eating burgers everyday — it isn’t healthy! Bonus: whopper-sacrifices show up on facebook feeds.

In The Advocate’s interview with Chris Evans, and they mention this part of the show Opposite Sex where the gents do a rendition of “I Will Survive” dressed as ladies. Chris said the walk from the trailer to the set was embarrassing due to the catcalls he was receiving — he looks passable! Since then he gets why girls don’t like being whistled at.
All awesome aside, their falsettos could use some work.
Michael Ian Black got banned from Facebook and wrote about it. Wtf, Mark Zuckerberg?
Neither of us generate as much advertising revenue as we would like, but that’s not my fault. I didn’t create your shitty business model. All I did was write a scathing article about it in the Wall Street Journal, which I then reprinted and left under people’s windshields at the mall. Don’t kill the messenger, Facebook!
Keanu Reeves was on David Letterman Wednesday night (Dec 10th) plugging The Day the Earth Stood Still. Topics covered: Toronto, his first professional acting job (Coke commercial), eradicating the human race, and monkeys sneezing.
This video is the first time i’ve heard Keanu Reeve’s irl accent. It’s ~magical~
Baby popping is tough work, and everything leading up to it is a pain in the, um, vagina. The uterus and whole lower half of the body gets all weird, breasts get super tender… it sucks. Yualin’s Hau Sheng Hospital in Taiwan now has a Hello Kitty-themed maternity ward in hopes of brightening the spirits of those in pain or super stressed out.
Director Tsai Tsung-chi opened up the hospital on his own dime — it comes out to 3 million US dollars — because his mom likes the cat. And his wife. And his daughter.
