Clay Shirky at the Web 2.0 Expo

Monday, May 12th, 2008

on the next wave of the internet, and where we go from here:

part one:

part two:

Shirky likens Gilligan’s Island and sitcoms to gin. he defends games that suck the user in like WoW, believing “it’s better to do something than nothing!” one of the more exciting ideas about the future of the internet: people that are born into the culture of the internet and computers. they don’t know what it was like in the before times. who knows what they will come up with in the next decade.

he mentions Vasco Furtado, a professor in Brazil who started a wikipage for crime watching. people log in and report assaults and what-have-yous with digital pushpins on a Google map. it isn’t only Brazil that’s on this map. Google does have the world rolled out for you, why not put the pins all over the place? Hopefully this will only produce good things. Wikicrimes.

a big thank you to jessica mullen who directed our class to this particular lecture.
